“Yo!” Jason yelled when he awoke at 5:00 a.m. from a nightmare.

“What’s wrong?” Zeida quickly rose with panic in her eyes.

Jason had a dream that Butch, Webb’s dog, threatened to eat him whenever Jason came to feed him. He jumped out of bed, tripped over the dangling bed sheet and fell to the floor. He scrambled in the dark, searching for the knapsack his clothes were in.

“Why the rush?” Zeida asked, hoping she didn’t do anything wrong.

“I got to feed and walk the dog,” Jason replied after finding his bag and stumbling to get dressed.

“Dog? What dog?”

“Webb’s dog. He’s going to kill me.”

“Who’s going to kill you, Papi?”

“The dog.”

“The dog?”

“The dog.” He shook his head. “You wouldn’t understand even if I tried to explain it.”

Zeida sat up with the covers up to her neck. She watched him get dressed. When he was slipping on the knee-high stockings over his socks she asked, “Stockings?” Jason shot her a defensive look, and then quickly smirked. She waved her hand at him and yawned out, “I know-I know, ‘I wouldn’t understand, even if you explained it.”

“Right,” he said with smile before tucking his .380 in his front pocket and then leaning over to kiss her goodbye.

As he was walking out of her bedroom she said, “Oh!” Jason quickly turned around. “Saturday night. My Delta sisters are having a charity ball at Carnegie Hall. I would like for you to come. It starts at six, and I can pick you up a tux. That is…if you don’t have one.”

Jason had Butch on his mind and didn’t have the slightest idea what a Delta was. “If I can make it, I’ll wear my own tux,” he told her, knowing he didn’t have one.
